Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG). Often called 'cabbage' as an abbreviation to medical staff, and in layman's
terms, a heart bypass. Cabbage, as if it is as insignificant as a type of
vegetable and an inexpensive one at that. The procedure is done to improve
blood flow to the heart. When blockages are found in arteries of a person’s
heart, the surgeon takes healthy arteries from other parts of the body and
grafts it on the heart, creating an alternative route for the blood to run. It
is the most common type of open-heart surgery no matter where you go.
People know that every surgery has its' risks. It is right there
on the indemnity forms and repeated to us like a drill on medical television;
Grey’s Anatomy, House, Scrubs. People know that doctors are as human as you and
me, and just as we are capable of making petty mistakes, they are too. People
also know that when you open your heart up to something, more often than not,
you will get it broken.
